Templer's Park GC - 2019 August

Templer's Park GC - 8th Aug 2019

Today David invited us for a round of charity golf tournament, as a result of his kind donations to a charity organization. It was a short gun start for about 120 participants, tee off immediately after lunch. The weather was nice although there was a quick shower for about 20 mins during the game. It's been awhile since all of us last played at Templer, so it was fun and enjoyable. Fairways and greens were well maintained.
At the end, David won himself a set of fire extinguisher, while Lim won a stand fan. Not a  bad results after all!

Kuching Golf Tour - 2019

Oct 1- 4, 2019

Although we were here just about 3 months ago from June 19-22, we love to come to Kuching to play golf for a simple reason that our home club is  affiliated to all the 3 courses, so the expenses is the cheapest. It’s not surprising that this is our 3rd trip of the year. Initially 6 of us; Alex/Lim/Lee/Khoo/Siew and David had booked our flight tickets, however, Siew has to back out during the last minute because he has got a nerve issue with his left eye.

The 5 Musketeers at Damai GCC

As usual, we played Samarahan GC in the afternoon immediately after our arrival, day 2 was scheduled for Damai GCC and the 3rd day, Sarawak GC (Santubong and Matang). We had to knowledge that SRGC is the best maintained course with the greens superbly cut to a green speed running at almost 10.0 on the steep-meter. Since there is only 5 of us, only Damai allowed us to play in a group of 5 Thai style. We also rented a Toyota Innova, which fits us comfortably for the whole journey.

Unlike the previous occasions where we usually had dinner at i-Cafe and Swee Garden Restaurants, we had decided to check out a few restaurants near BZL, Jalan Sekama as recommended by my lady friend. We were not disappointed after our dinners at a "xiu chow" stall located inside a coffee shop immediately behind Geyland coffee shop, which is located across the road from BZL. I.P.H. Roasted is also located just a few shop away, while Fook Xiong Seafood is also nearby. The food - cheap & nice! It was unanimously agreed that we will come back here to try other dishes.

Estimated basic expenses per pax:
1. Air Ticket.  236.00 (excl insurance 30.00)
2. Accommodation 330.00 (single for 3 nights)
3. Golf (buggy only)/Transport/Meals etc 480.00

With a total expenses of about 1k that comes with good golf, excellent food; and just add an extra few dollars for a good massage, what more can you ask for 4D3N golf holidays?

March 5 - 8, 2019

Although the dry spell has started in KL in March, it was not the case in Kuching. The overnight rain has made the courses rather soggy in some parts of the fairways. So it could be very frustrating if the ball is lost knowing it was a fairly good tee off. A lesson learned. Come to Kuching only after March!

As usual, we played Samarahan upon our arrivals in the afternoon, Damai the next day, then lastly, Sarawak GCC. No golf on next day. So morning is good to go to the Sundry Store near the market to shop for those specialty products from Sarawak, and a walk near the Riverside.

Thailand Golf Tour - Hatyai by Train, 2019 Feb

Our member  Liaw has been traveling by train to Hatyai a couple of times, according to him the journey is quite comfortable and takes about 6 hours from KL Central. So when it was suggested that we could tried the same for our 4d3n golf tour by train, without much hesitation 7 of our regular members quickly signed up. The 8th slot was also filled up by David’s friend; Allan Wong.

Wednesday, 20th Feb.

The ETS departed from KL Central at 10.05am and arrived at Padang Besar station at about 4.00pm. The journey was quite pleasant considering that we were all seated next to each other, separated with tables for four each. This was very much thanks to David who has done the booking with much consideration to seating arrangement as well. He even brought along promo coupons for burgers for our lunch on board! We just chat and jokes along the way, so time passed quickly before we realized we had arrived at our destination.

While waiting for our van just outside the Padang Besar train station, the sky opened suddenly with heavy downpours. Fortunately it soon faded out just while we board the van. The journey took about an hour to our hotel in Hatyai. Going through the Malaysian  and Thai Immigration counters were smooth as there were only a handful of people then.

We had dinner at the corner Thai tai chow stall just a short walk from the left side of the hotel. Fortunately we were there early, as we can see many dinners were slowly taken up all the available tables while waiting for our dishes. The rest of the night were taken up on massages and early rest to prepare for a big game tomorrow.

Thursday, 21th Feb.

We left hotel at 7am and arrived at our usual breakfast stall, located just before the turning to Southern Hill GC. Those Thai noodles and kuey chap, plus the variety of glutinous rice cakes all made up to a very satisfying breakfast. Not forgetting the young and cheerful lady boss, who speaks Hokkian though she is bit on the slim side!

Today, we played Thongthai Banrai GC. A relatively flat course but demands very accurate tee off. We enjoyed playing here previously , but this time the green was very slow and most part of the fairways were covered with grass scotched by the hot sun. As a result, the grounds were dry and hard. But for 470bht (gf270,cdy 200) per person, just blame the weather la!

Friday, 22nd Feb.

Since Kim Sun had not played Southern Hills GC before, we had decided to come here today. Thanks also very much to the convincing skill of David, he managed to book through his agent, Ah Moy for a discounted green fees at 700bht.

The course condition is much better than Banrai, most likely due to constant watering from the sprinkler system. SHGC always is a very challenging course especially the index 1 & 2 holes and the 180m par 3 island hole, where wind also comes into play most of the time. Water are in play at a lot of the holes; either during tee off or the approach shots. Always be satisfied if you have played to your game!

at West Side

Since this will be our last night in Hatyai, how can we go home without going to our favorite pub, West Side? Without doubt the band is still the best, especially after adding a new sexy saxophonist lady probably 3 years ago. They have added a number of hot Chinese hits and Cantonese songs by Beyond.

It's obvious the crowd love every pieces they played, especially our David. He was definitely on “high” mood after a few drinks, grooving and enjoying all by himself with the receptionist, the saxophonist and the patrons nearby. Got to cut down on his drink in future, though!

Saturday, 23rd Feb.

Since our train departs at about 2.20pm, it’s free and easy day. Most will go to the market to shop cashew nuts, Thai bak chang or anything to please the wife, that’s the truth my friends!

Some considerations if going to Hatyai by train.

1. Rent a Thai van, which can come next to the Padang Besar train station to pick up.
2. Make sure the Thai driver has a passport to pass through the Malaysian Immigration, otherwise the van will not be able to drive close to the train station.
3. Confirm the price from hotel pick up till drop off next to the train station.

Awana Golf - 2018 December

Awana Golf - 17th Dec .2018

Awana Golf - 17th Dec .2018

Today, Francis Lai has invited for a round of golf at Genting Awana GCC together with his friends. Apparently he got the free vouchers from one of his friends who is a VIP members of Genting Highlands. He has also told us the Management has done many improvements to the course so it is not as bad as maybe 10 years ago, where the fairways were soggy and wet most of the time due to the damp atmosphere here.

After an early roti canai at the mamak  store near my house, we arrived at the club house at about 7.30am. Since this is the December wet season, the weather was cool with a sensation of mountain fresh air.

Standing on the first tee box, the fairway was covered with thick fog. We could hardly see what’s in front more than 50m away. We waited for about 1/2 hrs, then we were told by the experienced caddy  that we could tee off and should be able to find our balls when we were closer to the balls where it should land. So we just tee off and noted the directions of our balls. True enough we found our balls on the fairways but the next challenge is right in front again. We could not even see the greens! Again using our rough estimated judgement, we just played by instinct. So it was a “Blind Golf” for most part of the first nine! Count yourself lucky if you have only lost 3 balls! In fact, we had to stop play after about an hour into the game because it was too foggy to continue.

The air cleared when we reached the 2nd nine. Although the fairways were soggy in quite a number of holes, the conditions were not as bad as about 15 years ago when I lasted played. Many golfers has avoided Awana for its wet and soggy conditions during the early days where balls plugged and lost on fairways are the most frustrating experience. After this round, it is obvious that the Management has done a good job to improve the playing conditions and I am sure, it is worthwhile coming back again during the dry seasons.
